At our pharmacies we offer a screening service to analyse your urine. It’s completely confidential and only takes a few minutes.

A urinalysis is a test which measures the presence of several substances in urine, such as blood, protein and bacteria. Abnormal levels of certain substances in urine and/or the presence of substances that are not usually present, may detect disease states in their early stages, such as urinary tract infections, kidney disease and high blood pressure.

Signs and symptoms

If you are experiencing any of the following symptoms, then it might be a good idea to have a urinalysis performed:

  • Cloudy urine
  • Foul smelling urine
  • Increased frequency or urgency to pass urine
  • Pain or discomfort whilst urinating
  • Pain in the loins
  • Waking up at night to pass urine

Before the consultation

Collect a sufficient urine sample in a clean, sterile container before visiting one of our pharmacies for a urinalysis. For the most accurate results, follow the below guidelines:

  • Collect a urine sample first thing in the morning as it is more concentrated and more likely to detect abnormalities
  • Ensure that you are not taking any antibiotics or large doses of vitamin C 3 days before the test as these may lower the sensitivity of the test
  • Do not perform any strenuous physical activity e.g. jogging as blood and protein may appear in your urine without being signs of disease
  • For women, it is advised not to perform the test 3 days before or after the period as these may falsify the test for blood

To get the most accurate results, a clean-catch method should be adopted to collect to sample midstream. This method involves the following steps:

  • Cleanse the genital area – women should spread their labia and clean from front to back while men should wipe the tip of the penis. This is important since bacteria and cells from the surrounding skin can contaminate the sample and interfere with the interpretation of the test results
  • Begin to urinate into the toilet
  • Collect urine in the sample container until you have filled the container with a volume that is equal to at least 2 fingertips
  • Finish urinating into the toilet
  • Deliver the sample to one of our pharmacies
  • If you can’t deliver the sample to the pharmacy within 60 minutes of collection, refrigerate the sample

How we test your urine

The service will consist of our pharmacist dipping a test strip in your urine sample for approximately 1 second. After 60 seconds, the colour on the test strip will be compared to the colour scale on the test strip vial for result interpretation.
